I thought you'd never ask.
The answer is an enthusiastic YES—I absolutely love when families include their dogs in their photo sessions.
For many families, dogs aren't just pets. They're family. They were there before the babies arrived, they greet you at the door every day, and they've been part of some of life's biggest milestones. Including them in your family photos helps tell the complete story of this season.
Whether you're planning a family photography session, maternity session, newborn session, or anniversary portraits in Orange County, bringing your dog can add so much personality, joy, and authenticity to your images.
Why Include Your Dog in Family Photos?
Some of my favorite images happen when dogs are involved.
Dogs have a way of bringing out genuine smiles, laughter, and connection. They help kids relax, encourage natural interactions, and often create the unexpected moments that become family favorites.
Years from now, you'll likely be grateful you included them.
Our dogs are with us for such a short chapter of our lives, and photographs become one of the most meaningful ways to preserve those memories.

What Types of Sessions Can Dogs Join?
Dogs are welcome at many of my:
- Family photography sessions
- Maternity photography sessions
- Newborn sessions
- Couple sessions
As an Orange County family photographer, I work at a variety of outdoor locations including beaches, parks, trails, and open spaces that can often accommodate dogs.
That said, not every location allows pets, so we'll discuss this during your planning consultation and choose a location that works well for everyone.
Tips for Bringing Your Dog to Your Photo Session
1. Bring a Helper
This is my biggest recommendation. A friend, grandparent, or family member can help hold your dog when they're not actively being photographed. This gives us more flexibility and allows you to relax and focus on your family.
2. Exercise Them Beforehand
A short walk before the session can work wonders. A dog that's had a chance to burn off some energy is often calmer, more attentive, and happier during photos.
3. Bring Treats
Treats are pure magic. They're great for grabbing attention, encouraging good behavior, and helping us get those adorable alert ears and curious expressions.
4. Keep Accessories Simple
A clean collar, neutral leash, or simple bandana photographs beautifully. Avoid bright neon colors or distracting accessories that may pull attention away from your family.
5. Trust the Process
Dogs don't need to sit perfectly still and look directly at the camera. Some of the most meaningful photographs happen when your dog is simply being themselves—walking alongside your children, cuddling up next to you, or looking up at their favorite person.

A Note From a Local DOG Mom & Photographer

If you've been wondering whether your dog can join your family photography session, the answer is almost always yes.
During your planning consultation, we'll talk through your vision, choose a dog-friendly location, and make sure everyone—including your four-legged family member—has a wonderful experience. Because family photos should include the whole family. And sometimes that family happens to have four paws and a wagging tail.
Looking for a dog-friendly family photographer in Orange County? I'd love to help you create meaningful photographs that celebrate every member of your family—furry ones included.
