Choosing the Right Location
Orange County offers a beautiful variety of settings for equestrian photography, from private barns and training facilities to open fields and more expansive Southern California landscapes.
The location we choose will depend on your horse, the logistics of transporting your horse, your vision, and the type of photographs you want to create.
Some sessions may feel most authentic right at your own barn, where your horse is comfortable and surrounded by the places that are part of your everyday life.
Others may call for a more editorial setting with open space, beautiful light, and room to create portraits with a little more drama.
I’ll help you think through the possibilities and provide personal recommendations, rather than leaving you to figure it all out on your own.
Photographing the Horse You Know and Love
One of my favorite parts of being an Orange County horse photographer is getting to photograph the personality behind the beautiful exterior.
Your horse doesn’t need to stand perfectly still or behave like a model.
In fact, some of my favorite photographs happen in the in-between moments. The ears moving toward a familiar sound. A curious nudge. The way your horse looks at you. The little expressions and quirks that make them unmistakably theirs.
We’ll create a variety of portraits, including beautiful individual images of your horse as well as photographs that show the relationship between the two of you.
What Should You Wear?
Wardrobe is another part of the planning process.
Your clothing should complement your horse and the environment without competing with either one.
Depending on the look you’re going for, we might plan classic equestrian attire, something more relaxed and editorial, or multiple looks throughout your session.
We’ll consider colors, textures, silhouettes, boots, hats, jewelry, and other details so that everything feels cohesive.
If you aren’t sure what to wear, that’s okay.
You don’t need to arrive with everything figured out. We’ll work through it together during the planning process.
The Little Details Matter
Some of the most meaningful photographs aren’t always the obvious ones.
The worn leather of your favorite saddle. Your hand resting on your horse’s neck. Dust rising beneath your boots. A bridle hanging in the tack room. The texture of a favorite blanket. A ribbon from an important show.
