A common concern clients have before their family, maternity, newborn, or couples session is seeing cloudy skies in the forecast. I hear things like "should we reschedule?" and "I hope it clears up!"


Honestly? Most of the time, overcast weather is actually ideal for photography! As an Orange County family photographer, some of my favorite sessions have been on cloudy days, soft gray mornings, and fully overcast evenings. While most people imagine bright sunshine being “perfect weather,” photographers often feel the opposite.

Why Photographers Love Overcast Days

In photography, we sometimes use large lighting modifiers called softboxes and diffusers to soften harsh light and create flattering skin tones. Clouds naturally do the exact same thing.


Direct sunlight hits your face and creates:

— harsh shadows

— squinting

— bright hotspots

— uneven lighting


Clouds do the opposite! They diffuse the light evenly across the entire scene, and the result is hard to beat:

— soft skin tones

— dreamy colors

— creamy highlights

— more flattering portraits

— a timeless, film-like feel


It’s one of the reasons overcast galleries often feel so romantic and emotional.

Overcast Light Is Especially Beautiful for Beach Sessions

Many of my Orange County beach sessions happen on cloudy days, and honestly, that soft coastal haze photographs beautifully.


Instead of harsh reflective light bouncing off the sand and water, overcast skies allow for:

— softer ocean tones

— more visible details

— relaxed expressions

— comfortable temperatures for families and children


And bonus: everyone is usually much happier without bright sun in their eyes.

Should We Ever Reschedule for Weather?

Yes, but certainly not due to the clouds! Typically I only recommend rescheduling for:

— heavy rain

— strong winds

— unsafe weather conditions

— park closures


A huge part of hiring a professional photographer is trusting them to know how to work with different lighting conditions and environments. Some of the most magical sessions happen when conditions aren’t “perfect” on paper.


In fact, if your session day ends up overcast, consider it your lucky day! It's often the best lighting we could ask for 🤍
