One of the most common questions I receive as an Orange County maternity photographer is: “When should I schedule my maternity photos?”
The short answer: Most maternity sessions are best photographed between 28 and 36 weeks.
This timeframe typically offers the perfect balance between a beautifully visible baby bump and the comfort needed to fully enjoy your session.
Why 28–36 Weeks Is Ideal for Maternity Photos
During this stage of pregnancy:
- Your baby bump is usually well-defined and photographs beautifully.
- Most moms-to-be are still comfortable walking, standing, and moving during the session.
- Swelling and late-pregnancy discomfort are often less pronounced than in the final weeks.
- There’s less risk of needing to cancel due to an early delivery.
For many expecting mothers in Orange County, this sweet spot creates the most flattering and enjoyable maternity photography experience.
If you’re expecting twins or multiples, I typically recommend scheduling your maternity session a little earlier—often between 24 and 30 weeks.
Twin pregnancies often progress differently, and photographing earlier helps ensure you’re comfortable while still capturing a beautiful bump.

Not necessarily.
I’ve photographed beautiful maternity sessions at 36, 37, and even 38 weeks. Every pregnancy is different.
However, I recommend reaching out as early as possible so we can reserve your preferred date and avoid the stress of last-minute scheduling.
Is It Ever Too Late for Maternity Photos?
When Should I Book My Orange County Maternity Session?
The best time to book is during your second trimester.
Many families reserve their maternity session as early as:
- 18–24 weeks
- Immediately after their anatomy scan
- At the same time they begin planning newborn photos
Booking early gives you access to the best dates, locations, and wardrobe planning options.
